Je n’aime pas l’uniforme scolaire, parce que ca…

supprime l’individualite.

Excuse the lack of accents and that thing that should be under the c in ca. That’s one of the few phrases I actually remember from all those essays I’ve written in French; if I remembered it right, it should mean ‘I don’t like school uniform, because it suppresses individuality’. Or something like that. And it seems as good a title as any, seeing as it introduces my topic while allowing me to show off how little I’ve gained from over 6 years of terrible French teaching. :)

Whether pupils should wear school uniform is a topic that practically every pupil, at least in this country, will think about/be forced to think about at some point in their school career. I’ve always been quite undecided about it, but recently I’ve decided on an opinion; I don’t really think uniform is a good idea.

One of the main points in favour of school uniform is that it promotes a feeling of unity within the school, and makes us look smart when we go out on trips.
It really doesn’t.
My school, for example, is fairly lax about uniform. We all have to wear a white shirt and our school tie. As long as the tie is showing, you can wear pretty much what you like with your shirt and tie except for a few rules(no extremely short skirts, nothing football-related, nothing with the logo of an alcohol/cigarette company, that kind of thing). As long as you keep it fairly black/grey/navy coloured, you’re fine. This is why what I wear every day tends to be made up of black and blue converse, black skinnies, a baggy hoodie of some kind(sometimes plain black, sometimes this one, whatever really) and, of course, my shirt and tie(complete with Funeral For A Friend and Bullet For My Valentine badges). It’s hardly a uniform if pupils turn up in jeans, is it? xD
Still, what I’m saying is that everyone dresses totally differently. The only thing tying us all together is the shirt and tie, and seeing as most people hide that as well as they can, it doesn’t do the job particularly well. You’d need a smarter uniform for that; and all that would do is make everyone the exact same, like sheep. I don’t particularly want to be a sheep.
As for making us smart when we go on trips, most trips are non-uniform anyway. And when they’re not, like I’ve already said, we don’t exactly look smart anyway. Only school with really smart uniforms do, and there aren’t any of them round here. We all look equally scruffy. :3

Schools also say that it stops poorer pupils being bullied for not being able to afford the same designer brands.
Firstly, if that happens, the kid being bullied should just tell whoever’s bullying them that at least they don’t look like some ned. Because half the time a designer label will mean ned clothes. :P
Secondly, like I’ve already said, everyone pretty much just wears what they want anyway, so it actually makes no difference.

Really, the only good thing I can say about uniform is that it prevents whores from wearing those tiny skirts that would be of more use as belts(though even if we didn’t have uniform, they could still be banned), and that it means I don’t have to bother thinking about what to wear in the mornings. But still, it seems pointless to me.

What do you think? I’m curious to know if anyone agrees with me. :)
